Others cost next to nothing to build. All are hidden among the trees, at the intersection of imagination and creativity.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re going to build cabins inspired by, salvaged from and built around old-growth trees, it is perhaps only fitting to do so in the aptly nicknamed Evergreen State.<\/p>\n<p>Every summer,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/jacobwitzling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jacob Witzling<\/a>, a second-grade teacher near Boston, flies the 2,400 miles from Watertown, MA, to Olympia, WA, to build whimsical cabins out of old-growth cedar, fir and hemlock.<\/p>\n<p>He salvages lumber from demolished buildings, upcycles appliances and incorporates fanciful geometric shapes along the way, giving the cabins an imaginative, Seuss-like appearance.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-227559\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theheartofarizona.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/WhimsicalCabins_PhotoByErikHecht_010_20170727__DSC2386-a0ef65.jpg?resize=800%2C1067\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"1067\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always like the notion of sculptures that people can live in, like homes being more than just a place to live. Maybe something like art,\u201d Witzling said. \u201cI\u2019m an artist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It makes perfect sense, then, that Witzling\u2019s love for fanciful homes started with a book called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Handmade-Houses-Guide-Woodbutchers-Art\/dp\/0891040013\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Handmade Houses: A Guide to the Woodbutcher\u2019s Art<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0His father owned the early \u201970s tome that Witzling fell in love with.\u00a0That \u2014 and the classic childhood inclination to simply build a fort.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-227551\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theheartofarizona.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/WhimsicalCabins_PhotoByErikHecht_067_20170727__DSC2496-5035a3.jpg?resize=800%2C582\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"582\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always made forts as a kid, you know, out of blankets and pillows and in the couch and stuff like that,\u201d he said. \u201cI guess that\u2019s where it all started.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Witzling moved to Olympia to attend college, a friend was living in a fantastical cabin in the woods. He saw it and was immediately hooked.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-227541\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theheartofarizona.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/WhimsicalCabins_PhotoByErikHecht_020_20170727__DSC2320-c9239b.jpg?resize=800%2C534\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<p>Shortly after, Witzling decided to make a go of building similar homes. Without a budget, he rescued materials: old floors from a bowling alley that eventually became a cabin deck and granite countertops that were discarded from a construction site, among other things. He taught himself the basics along the way.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-227545\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theheartofarizona.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/WhimsicalCabins_PhotoByErikHecht_031_20170727__DSC2355-bb0de7.jpg?resize=800%2C1067\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"1067\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know what I was doing, and then when I built my first cabin, it was all recycled materials that I scavenged like a vulture,\u201d he remembered. \u201cI built it. It was so tall and rickety and was going to fall down, I thought. But by the time I built my second cabin, I had a stronger grasp on what to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-227543\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theheartofarizona.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/WhimsicalCabins_PhotoByErikHecht_028_20170727__DSC2340-79b632.jpg?resize=800%2C534\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<p>In the decade since then, Witzling has built a number of tiny cabins in the woods, with each home having a footprint under 200 square feet. Some are completely off-grid \u2014 all honor the natural environment by using reclaimed or local wood.<\/p>\n<p>A few are even covered with moss, making them living, breathing works of art.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-227547\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theheartofarizona.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/WhimsicalCabins_PhotoByErikHecht_044_20170727__DSC2462-81c2d1.jpg?resize=800%2C600\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want them to meld into the environment. They\u2019re kind of like sculptures in a way \u2014 livable sculptures,\u201d he said. \u201cI want them to accent and honor their environment. That\u2019s why I like to use the moss and the local wood, cedar and whatnot. It\u2019s your home, and it\u2019s in its home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-227546\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theheartofarizona.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/WhimsicalCabins_PhotoByErikHecht_040_20170727__DSC2422-3683a0.jpg?resize=800%2C534\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<p>Being calculated about sourcing the building materials also forced Witzling to think about his environmental impact. (He\u2019s lived in all of his cabins at some point.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt forces you to be more intentional about stuff. I can\u2019t have dishes all over the place. There\u2019s no space for it,\u201d he said. \u201cSo you use your bowl, you clean your bowl, you put your bowl away. It\u2019s really rewarding to have to be intentional about stuff. I have to keep my two pairs of shoes in their little nest in the corner, because otherwise they take up too much space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-227550\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theheartofarizona.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/WhimsicalCabins_PhotoByErikHecht_059_20170727__DSC2445-6bd447.jpg?resize=800%2C600\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<p>That doesn\u2019t mean he skimps on details. A recent build included an unusual cabin with an octagonal pyramid roof. The geometric space holds the lofted bedroom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like it because no matter which way you wake up, you\u2019re looking outside,\u201d he said. \u201cI always tell my students you can do things with math and that math is real. The world is built out of math. He chronicles his projects and methods and shares insights and tips.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBuilding things is really human.
